Review: "Birds of Prey" - A fun ride where the females kick butt

Starring: Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth WinsteadJurnee Smollett-Bell, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco

In the spin-off from Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie, Bombshell) is recovering from her break-up with the Joker as she tries to learn how to stand on her own two feet while trying not to die. Once the world finds out she is no longer protected by the Joker, her biggest enemy is Sionis (Ewan McGregor, Doctor Sleep) and his minion Zsasz (Chris Messina, TV’s The Mindy Project). They are trying to get a diamond that was worth lots of money that was stolen by Cassandra (Ella Jay Basco) and trying to take out Harley at the same time.

The spin-off was no surprise considering how well received that Margot Robbie was as Harley. Even though Suicide Squad didn’t make the bankroll that production companies were hoping for, it did well enough with the fans.

I will admit that I was, like many other people, nervous at how the movie was going to come out but interested all the same. I enjoy watching Robbie on the screen because she has a way to melt into the character where you no longer see her but see the character she is portraying. There are times during this movie where she goes in and out of the character that I see for Harley and we get a glimpse as to why she fell for Joker in the first place.

I am a fan of Batman so I really enjoyed the little mentions that the movie makes for the comic book including characters that other people may not notice. It falls nicely into the world that Warner Bros is trying to create. I am sure that they are going to make more movies with these characters and even if it doesn’t make the money that they are hoping, it does move the story along.

The biggest thing that this movie proves, besides that girls can kick ass almost as easily as a man can, is that Ewan McGregor can be a bad guy but you love him just the same. I loved him so much as Sionis that a small part of me had wished that he would win because he was so great as the character. To his credit Messina as Zsasz is probably the best adaptation for the character I have ever seen. He is creepy and crazy that you really would not want to run into him on the street.

The movie is entertaining, funny, and has a lot of action-packed fighting sequences. There are some scenes that are a bit of a stretch for reality, but remember, this is a movie based on a comic book character. It must be a bit of a stretch and that’s the whole point. If you are mad about the lack of reality, then you are watching the wrong movie and get out of here. Because this movie is great and you need to go in with an open mind.

Wanda is struggling to keep control in episode 7 of 'WandaVision'

If you are not already hooked on Marvel’s new TV show on Disney+ WandaVision then this week’s episode will certainly have you hook, line, and sinker. This week’s show is titled ‘Breaking the Fourth Wall’ and in some ways it breaks more walls then that. The show hits the 2000s and Modern Family seems to be the theme with some splashes of other sitcoms from the 2000s. I really enjoyed the commentary that Wanda and Vision have when they are talking to the camera. The glances and the 'knowing stare' from Vision are completely spot on.  Like the other episodes, this one is jam-packed with information so you need to make sure you are paying attention. Wanda is slowly but surely losing control of the Hex. The kids are noticing this and want to help but Wanda just thinks relaxing will help (not likely). In the reality part of the show, we discover that Hayward is trying to get Vision back so he can use him as a weapon (no surprise there). Monica and Jimmy meet with her friend (...

Review: 'Dominik' by Sawyer Bennett - Can Dominik tame Willow's wild heart?

In the 6th book of the series, Dominik takes the lead as he tries to get Willow out of his thoughts, but that proves more difficult the more time he spends with her. Willow doesn't want to tie herself down to this man, but the more she fights, the harder she falls. When you do book series like this, it's hard to like every single one. Especially when you unintentionally compare the books with one another. I had a hard time liking the relationship with Dominik and Willow. Perhaps its that we didn't really get to see the beginning (you hear about it in other books) or maybe I just didn't like the way that they are together. It just didn't tickle my fancy. They didn't have that 'it' factor that separates the story from others. I did enjoy the cat and mouse game that Willow was playing with Dominik. That part was entertaining. See a man of Dominik stature get frustrated and make moves that I am sure are out of his character. But even that got old aft...
