Here is the movie that set the world on fire for the Marvel universe. This was the first move that was released, and all the pressure was on RDJs shoulders. This was a big deal considering that RDJ was still looking to clean up his reputation after he finished cleaning up from drugs and leaving prison. This movie also showed how amazing of a director that Jon Favreau. He set the standard for the future Marvel films and set the stage.
This movie made everyone fall back in love with RDJ because he knocked it out of the park. There are few characters that get spot on casting and this definitely is one. He can capture that snarky, arrogant side of Tony Stark while being vulnerable when he needs to. These movies show that there is more than just beating the bad guys. They have layers and RDJ shows that with this character.
Iron Man as a superhero is a leader without meaning to be a leader. Stark as Iron Man knows that he can do anything to protect the world but his arrogance will be the death of him. He creates his own monster in this story as his partner, Stane (Jeff Bridges) uses Stark’s idea to try and create weapons of mass destruction. Makes sense. Who wouldn’t want an army of Iron Man doing their bidding.
The most important piece of information to pull out of this movie is not only the introduction to Iron Man, but also the introduction to Phil Coulson (Phil Gregg) and SHIELD. There is an ongoing joke in the movie where Coulson repeats what SHIELD is over and over again, because it is a mouthful. As we all know, SHIELD plays an important part in the whole Marvel universe because it’s the rope that holds all the Avengers together. This is the first look that we get for Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. He is one scene but he steal that scene.
While the story is not as intense with action or story line as some of the later films, it is one of the more enjoyable ones. It’s nostalgic seeing where Stark came from and where he ends up. Because without him, there is no Iron Man.
